FAQs About Invisalign

As more alternatives to braces are introduced to the market, some options will get more attention than others. Dr. Moutaz Abdeen of Alexandria Smiles Dentistry in the Alexandria, VA, area would like to help answer some of the most common questions concerning Invisalign invisible braces.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a form of invisible braces that are used to straighten teeth over a period of time. Unlike traditional braces which are visible and are affixed to the teeth, Invisalign is a clear substance made of non-toxic chemicals that are placed over the teeth to gently push them into place over time. Similar actions are being performed to the teeth, but with no wires or rubber bands.

Are Invisalign’s Benefits Purely Cosmetic?

No. In addition to Invisalign being clear in color, they are removable. This makes it easier to eat, as well as to maintain oral hygiene, as you will not have to combat braces over what to eat and how to clean that food from the braces.

How Long Must Invisalign Be Worn?

Invisalign sets are designed to be worn while sleeping, but must also be worn most of the day. They must be worn 20-22 hours each day to be able to do their jobs. This is important as a new set of aligners is provided every two weeks. Missing a lot of time between aligners may make it impossible to use the next set, delaying the overall treatment period.

The duration of using Invisalign varies depending on the starting point of the teeth. The average duration of use is 12 to 18 months for adults, or two to three years for kids, which is no longer than traditional braces.

Are Mail-Order Frames Similar?

Invisalign sets are made from much more than just a picture of your teeth or a bite in clay. X-rays are reviewed in tandem with a full examination of your gums to determine exactly what angle each tooth is extending and how much that needs to be adjusted on a regular basis to lead the teeth to the goal position. Products that can be ordered without someone physically seeing your mouth can not perform the job to this degree. Without someone monitoring progress, that could do more damage.
